Title: Classic LP Records

In attempts to have recordings of the human voice and other sounds for entertainment, classic Long Playing (LP) Records were developed encapsulating the development of music distribution over the decades.

Conception
With Thomas Edison’s invention of the phonograph, reproduction of recorded sounds and voices was not commercially successful until Emile Berliner and his patented gramophone was invented. The cylinder which is used on Edison’s phonograph was replaced by Berliner’s flat discs, which favoured mass reproducing musical entertainment.

Material
The earliest Classic LP Records were originally made from Shellac, a natural thermoplastic obtained from the secretions of the Lac insect. Other materials such as synthetic resins and clay were eventually used as fillers. 1948 saw the beginning of LP Records in Vinyl disc.

Pop Culture
Due to mass productions, distribution of LP Records became easier and record companies were thriving until the advent of the digital compact discs (CD). Together with the onset of rock and roll music, LP Records carried the names of music icons such as the Beatles and has become a great part of history.

Evolution
The first discs played only on one side, at 78 rotations per minute (rpm). Come 1948, both sides of the discs can be played. The 12 inch LP developed a new format which allowed 33 rpm and had 25 minutes continuous playing time on each side. Progressively, 45s were developed, which holds the same musical capacity but at a smaller package.
