Quercetin in Protastitis and Anti-Aging

Quercetin is a kind of a naturally occurring compound called the flavonoids, found on different herbs, fruits and vegetables. Found on the red pigment of red onions and apples, it is a good source of antioxidants and has been found to greatly reduce the symptoms of certain diseases and illnesses. Because of the great health benefits that can be obtained from Quercetin, it has been isolated from different organic sources and can be included in your diet as dietary supplements.

Different diseases can be prevented or cured by the components of Quercetin. Diabetes patients for example have a significantly reduced glucose level. It has also shown anti-inflammatory action which inhibits congestion-causing histamine. Respiratory diseases are also prevented by increased Quercetin intake. Other notable reduction of symptoms and improved conditions are experienced by heart disease and cancer patients and even psychologically to reduce anxiety and fatigue. It can improve conditions of the immune system, cell renewal and balancing the release of enzymes in the body. It can be found in apples, nuts, red onions, tea, berries, cauliflower and cabbage and increased intake of these would also increase the Quercetin levels in your bloodstream.

Because of the many benefits of this flavonoid, it has been used to cure or at least reduce the symptoms of prostatitis. There are different types of prostatitis: Acute bacterial, chronic bacterial, chronic pelvin pain syndrome and asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis. 500mg of Quercetin twice a day improves the condition of prostatitis patients. The National Institute of Health’s Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index also shows that it has lowered the scores or the severity of chronic prostatitis.

The most common type of these is bacterial prostatitis which is caused by the growth of bacteria Escherichia coli and Klebsiella. Symptoms of the acute bacterial prostatitis (ABP) include fever, chills, frequent urination but incomplete emptying of bladder, joint pain, lower back pain and difficulty in the activities and functions of the penis, testicles, scrotum and rectum. The less severe however, is the Chronic bacterial prostatitis (CBP), which includes symptoms of blood in the semen, fever, lower back pain and lower abdomen, painful ejaculation and recurring urinary tract infection. When left untreated, complications of ABP include acute urinary retention, abscess, and bloodstream infection.

To alleviate these symptoms and complications, Quercetin exerts potent antioxidant activity that interferes with the process of manufacturing and release of histamine and inflammatory or allergic mediators. It also helps in alleviating swelling in prostatitis. Because of the antioxidant activity and vitamin-C sparing action, it could also altogether inhibit further complications and the growth of prostate cancer cells. Stimulating the activity of the mitochondria, the anti-inflammatory takes effect into the cells and hampers further bacterial growth.

Considered as an antioxidant, Quercetin takes into the bad bacteria and the damaging particles in the body called free radicals. These are usually obtained in the environment with pollution and too much stress. Flavonoids get into the membranes of these bacteria, tamper with the DNA and eventually cause bad cells to die. This is applicable to prostatitis, cancer cells and aging.

Prevention and treatment of protastitis includes increased intake of Quercetin-rich food, supplements, increased water intake, and by having protected sex.

Quercetin also increases the production of fibrocetin and collagen which are the basic components of the skin. It has then, properties that would help in keeping your skin healthy and can aid in aging retardation. Collagen holds the skin together and is naturally present in the skin, muscles, ligaments, joints and bones. However, this deteriorates as we age. There are products which claim to contain collagen in them but this cannot be the case as the properties of collagen are too fragile to remain whole after chemical processes. Stimulating the production of collagen and fibrocetin is a much credible way to improve your skin. Enzymes from red wine, tea and caffeine contain Quercetin that helps in the stimulation of collagen and fibrocetin production in the body. Improved skin elasticity and reduced joint and muscle pains are only a few of this flavonoid’s benefits.

In fighting off free-radicals, it stays longer in the body than caffeine which only lasts for 3 to 5 hours, whereas Quercetin lasts for up to 16 hours. This means that your skin cells are protected for a longer period of time especially if you are going out or would need to stay in the office for longer periods of time. It helps in battling stress and decrease cellular damage.

Catalyzing proteasomes in the cell, it also improves skin cell function apart from protecting it. Proteasomes are protein complexes inside a cell that helps in breaking down unneeded proteins in the body. Breaking these proteins down help in synthesizing new proteins and would improve the functions of protein in the body as amino acids. This process is crucial in the cell cycle, improving the body’s reaction to stress, and regulating the expression of genes in conception.

It also improves blood circulation in the body by dilating the blood vessels and allows more oxygen and blood flow. This means that your skin will look better and healthier making it supple and looking fresh. While aging, blood flow on the skin is less, which is the reason for sagging arm skin and wrinkles. When the capillaries on your skin are dilated, the skin becomes firmer thereby reducing age spots and wrinkles. In general, it produces more nitrous oxide which improves dilation of nerves in the body. Less blood platelet-aggregation is another of Quercetin’s function that improves the flow of blood. It can therefore, also include blood to pump in other organs, including the brain and heart, making for a healthier physique.

There are a lot of products in the market for anti-aging that includes Quercetin in the list of its ingredients. Anti-aging creams, moisturizers and lotions are advertised to have it present in their components. Apart from these topical solutions, dietary supplements in powdered or capsule form have Quercetin in them. To maximize the effects of this flavonoid, it is important to have a healthy lifestyle, a balanced diet and exercise to aid it in making you healthy and young-looking.
